After spending last summer gaining valuable research experience in Spain, I was offered the position by Dr. Simon Chao to be a research assistant at his lab. This is a great experience to further widen my scope in the structural engineering. I have worked in the research lab since July-2015 and have worked with several of his graduate students in building specimens, setting-up the lab for testing and collecting data.had the pleasure to work under him on various research on reinforced concrete and steel that have the potential to make significant changes it the design of structures for earth-quake resiliency. Some of the researches that I have worked on include an innovative new design for coupling beams. Coupling beams are usually utilized in multi-story structures. They connect adjacent concrete shear walls through a reinforced concrete beam with crossing steel reinforcement in an x- configuration extending between adjacent shear walls. These coupling beams are often challenging to fabricate and verify the accuracy of the fabrication detail. This research is focused on addressing these challenges. Once the paper on this research is published, I would be glad to write about it.
